Report a problem
What to do when someone breaks the code of conduct, or when you or someone else does not feel safe.
Most conversations in the community are friendly. When one is not, you do not have to handle it alone, and you should not have to. Here is what to do.
Replying to a troll or an insult in the same thread almost always makes it worse. It gives the post more attention, and it can pull you into breaking the rules yourself. Step back and report it instead.
Every platform we use has a way to report a post or a message to its moderators. The code of conduct names this as one of the two ways to report.
- Forum: use the flag button under the post.
- Discord: report the message, or contact a moderator of the server.
- Reddit: use the report option on the post or comment.
- GitHub: use Report content in the menu of an issue, pull request, or comment.
This is the right choice for spam, off-topic posts, rude replies, and most other everyday problems.
For anything serious, or anything that does not fit a single post, email [email protected]. For example:
- Harassment, threats, or someone who keeps contacting you after you asked them to stop.
- Behavior that crosses platforms, like someone following you from the forum to your social media.
- Someone publishing private information, like an address.
- A problem at an in-person event.
- A complaint about a moderator.
Describe what happened, where, and when. Links and screenshots help. If you report something that happened to someone else, say so.
All complaints are reviewed and investigated promptly and fairly. The people handling them are obliged to respect the privacy and security of the person reporting.
The community team cannot help in an emergency. If you believe someone is at risk of harm, contact your local emergency services first.
The code of conduct also applies at meetups and other events. If something happens, tell the host of the event. Anyone can also email [email protected], during or after the event.
Moderators look at the report and decide what to do, following the steps of enforcement of the code of conduct. You do not always hear back about the outcome, because the privacy of everyone involved matters too. That does not mean nothing happened.
