Usage

The picture entity card shows one entity as a picture. The image fills the card, and a dark, see-through bar at the bottom shows the name of the entity on the left and its state on the right. Selecting the card opens the more-info dialog of the entity.

This page has no live example. The demo home on this site has no pictures or cameras to show.

Use it for a camera: the card shows its latest snapshot, or a live stream. Use it for an image entity, or a person with a profile picture. And use it for an entity that is easier to recognize from a picture than from an icon, like a lamp, a doorbell, or the garden.

For anything else, the tile card tells people more in less space. When the picture should show several entities, use the picture glance card. For a picture without an entity, use the picture card.

Where the picture comes from

The card picks its image in this order:

  1. The picture of the entity itself, when show_entity_picture is on and the entity has one, like the album art of a media player.
  2. The image you set.
  3. The image of an image entity, or the profile picture of a person.

A camera entity always shows the camera, and camera_image shows a camera for any other entity. With camera_view: live, the card plays the live stream instead of refreshing a snapshot. Live streams use more bandwidth, so keep auto unless people need to see motion.

State images and filters

The picture can change with the state. state_image maps a state to an image, like a photo of the lamp lit for on, and one in the dark for off. state_filter maps a state to a CSS filter, like brightness(50%).

When the entity is off, or unavailable, and there is no image for that state, the card turns the picture gray. People see at a glance that the lamp is off, without reading the state.

Name and state

Use show_name and show_state to hide either part of the bar. With one of them, the text is centered. With neither, the bar is gone, and the card is just the picture. Hide the state only when the picture already shows it, like with a camera.

Content

  • Use photos with a calm area at the bottom. The bar is see-through, and busy detail behind it makes the text hard to read.
  • Set an aspect_ratio when the images of several cards differ in size, so the cards line up. Use fit_mode to decide how the image fills that shape: cover crops, contain letterboxes, fill stretches.

Configuration

  • entity (string, required): the entity to show.
  • name (string): the name to show. Defaults to the name of the entity.
  • image (string or media): the image to show, as a URL or a media source item. Required for most entities, see above.
  • show_entity_picture (boolean): uses the picture of the entity, when it has one. Defaults to false.
  • camera_image (string): a camera entity to show as the picture.
  • camera_view (string): auto for snapshots, or live for the live stream. Defaults to auto.
  • state_image (map): an image for each state.
  • state_filter (map): a CSS filter for each state.
  • aspect_ratio (string): the shape of the image, like 16x9 or 50%. Ignored when the card has a fixed number of rows in the sections view.
  • fit_mode (string): cover, contain, or fill. Defaults to cover.
  • show_name (boolean): shows the name. Defaults to true.
  • show_state (boolean): shows the state. Defaults to true.
  • theme (string): a theme to apply to the card.
  • tap_action (action): what happens when you select the card. Defaults to more-info.
  • hold_action, double_tap_action (action): what happens on hold or double tap. Default to none.

In code

The card lives in src/panels/lovelace/cards/hui-picture-entity-card.ts, and the element is <hui-picture-entity-card>. The picture is a <hui-image> (src/panels/lovelace/components/hui-image.ts), shared with the picture glance and picture elements cards. That element handles the camera snapshots and streams, the state images, the filters, the gray filter for an entity that is off, and the aspect ratio.

The card throws No image source configured when the entity is not a camera, image, or person, and there is no image, state_image, camera_image, or show_entity_picture.

The bar takes its colors from --ha-picture-card-background-color and --ha-picture-card-text-color. The card has no grid options of its own: in the sections view, it takes all 12 columns, and its height follows the image.
